Excel and VBA help from a freelance consultant in the UK

Excel and VBA are the core of what I do. Whether it's a macro that has stopped working, a report that takes someone a day to compile, or a workbook the whole team runs on, I make it reliable, documented and quick.

How the work goes

Most Excel problems aren't really Excel problems. They're a process that grew inside a spreadsheet because that was the tool to hand, and now it's the bottleneck. I start by understanding what the workbook is for and who touches it, then fix or rebuild the parts that hurt: formulas that break when a row is added, macros nobody dares edit, data that arrives in the wrong shape every month.

The work ranges from an hour's fix to a multi-week build. Small jobs are usually turned round within a day or two. Bigger ones get a written scope and a fixed price before I start, and you get the code, the workbook and a plain-English note on how it works, so you're never dependent on me.

I work in Excel for Windows and for Mac, in VBA, Power Query, Power Pivot and Office Scripts, and I'll tell you honestly when a job has outgrown Excel and would be better as an app.

What it tends to cost

Honestly, most of this kind of work is small. Looking back over the 58 reviewed jobs like this where the price is on record, about two thirds came to £200 or less, and the biggest landed in the £800-£1,000 band. About half were done within two days; the longest took about 21 days.

Those were marketplace jobs, so on the small side. Projects that come to me directly are usually bigger, and for those I write the scope down and give you a fixed price before I start. If you'd rather work by the hour, that's £80 an hour, tracked and invoiced regularly.

What clients said

Chris was awesome. The product is awesome and I will definitely use him again for future projects. It took a process that was taking us 3 - 4 days to compile down to 15 minutes.

I needed Excel Macros on Mac - to automate the same process across 69 files in the folder, and maybe 8/10 other experts on Fiverr said that they couldn't do it; Chris did. 10/10 recommend his services, Chris communication was prompt and services delivery very quick (quicker than expected, in fact). We had to go through many revisions but this was expected due to very specific request on my side. Chris, thanks!

Questions people ask

Do you work with Excel for Mac?
Yes. Mac VBA has its own quirks and a lot of people turn it down; I take it on, and one of the case studies on this page is exactly that.
Will I be able to maintain it myself afterwards?
That's the aim. Code is commented, the workbook is documented, and for anything bigger I'll walk you through it on a call so it isn't a black box.
How do you price Excel work?
Small fixes are priced on the spot once I have seen the file. Anything larger gets a written scope and a fixed quote before work starts, so there are no surprises. If you would rather pay by the hour, that is £80 an hour, tracked and invoiced regularly.
Is my data safe with you?
Files are handled under the data protection policy on this site, which sets out exactly what I keep, for how long, and when it is deleted. If you'd rather send a sanitised copy, that works too.
